THE END OF A GREAT SEMESTER

A great semester is coming to its end. As students pass by the office to say goodbye, right after their final exams at the university, we know a wonderful group of individuals takes with them a piece of Mallorca's heart with them and back to the USA.

Group meeting

Mallorca is not the typical study abroad destination (not many Americans vacation or study here), so our students for sure got what they came looking for: an authentic experience of integration in Spain and its language, and a for-life relationship with many people from here. It is impressive to see how well our students speak Spanish now, compared to the moment when they arrived to Palma four months ago.

So, since our second newsletter, this is what we have been doing.

MADRID EXCURSION

By the end of April, we travelled to Madrid, the Capital of Spain. In three days, we got an intense introduction to the city, its museums, its economics, its people, its social and fun life. And of course we also got to eat the traditional chocolate with churros.

LIBERAL ARTS PROGRAM

Advanced Spanish students participated in culturally interesting field visits related to their CIEE classes. For example...

PALMA IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

This is a CIEE class about history, traditions, art, gastronomy, people, popular celebrations of the Mediterranean world, taking Mallorca as a perfect laboratory to explore first hand and experience them. Students visit the impressive Gothic Cathedral by the sea, and the Christian Palace named Almudaina, which was on its time an Arab fortress and palace.

Another day, students discovered Miró's playful museum overlooking the sea. Not many people know that Palma has one of the three Miró's Foundations in the world, the only one which hosts Miró's house and workshop, where the painter actually worked for twenty years.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETING

This class was invited by Palma Aquarium, which holds a rich collection of corals form all over the world, not only to see the installations (and the deep sharks' tank!), but to learn first-hand from the Director of Marketing from a very active and innovative department in its marketing strategies.

FINAL PRESENTATION OF INTERNSHIPS

Students presented a final PPT about their internship work and experience in a company in Mallorca (for example Brújula, a marketing agency), in a hotel (kitchen, restaurant, reception), and in TESL (in an elementary and secondary school). See pictures bellow:

LANGUAGE CLASSES

All language classes did a cooking class in small groups (no more than five students per session). Students learnt to cook delicious paella with a locally well-known cook who appears in Mallorcan TV, Cati Aguiló.

EXCURSION INTO THE SEA WITH BOTH PROGRAMS

This semester we decided to take the adventure of sailing the Mediterranean, around the natural reserve of Cabo Blanco, with impressive cliffs into the sea. It was still a little bit chilly, but the views were spectacular.

Octavio got to be the captain for at least an hour!

Tiempo para el ron
Captain Pep Morata invited us to rum, as "this is the drink of sailmen!" (he said...)

FAREWELL
