Liberal Arts Program
My involvement with the CIEE Liberal Arts Program in Palma de Mallorca, Spain was one of the most adventurous, breathtaking and cultural experiences I have ever been a part of. To say I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn with such unique and caring individuals who share the same values as I do is only the beginning of the million reasons why I am blessed to have studied in Palma.
Looking back on my experience abroad, I would not have changed a single moment. When deciding between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, to me, the answer was obvious. Palma enriched my knowledge and understanding of not only the Catalan and Castellano culture, but also the Mallorquin ways of living. The island consists of the most colorful, heart filling individuals who really do live by the words, "Live everyday to the fullest". Ranging from their energy to run, bike and swim outdoors in rain or shine, to being open to teaching international students like me, they seem to not miss a beat by putting a smile on my face. The professors, students and directors made me feel at home from the start when I first arrived in February. I do not think another program in any other city but Palma could have made that same feeling possible.
Simply put, I could not have learned as much in Iowa as I did in Palma for my 5 months of study. Some may say the difference between Palma and another city in Spain is simply the dialect, but I will say Palma will remotely change one's life. I will forever treasure my experience through this milestone in my life and I truly would not change my decision to study in Palma.
I would recommend every student to study in a foreign country while they have the opportunity. Before what I thought was going to be a long, tearful journey away from my family and friends, I soon realized that the University of Iowa has generously provided me a second home halfway across the world. Palma de Mallorca cannot be talked on the same level as other cities in Spain. Palma's beautiful island and everlasting experiences were once to me considered a world unimaginable, where now I can say I have lived my dream, and I hope future students can say the same after choosing the CIEE Palma de Mallorca Liberal Arts Program.
