Why mountais are sexier than beaches, Hiking by Alex Sedor, Spring 2014 at CIEE Palma de Mallorca

Spring 2014

Newsletter IV: Field Study Trips, Excursions and Cultural Activities. CIEE Palma de Mallorca, Spring 2014

And now let me tell you a little bit about the last field study visits related to CIEE classes in Palma de Mallorca during this past spring semester. All CIEE classes combine work in the classroom with interactive field visits, so let's see what some of the classes did:

Spring 2014 students taking Introduction to Everyday Catalan visited a Mallorcan family and spent time with their members, learning vocabulary of the house, the kitchen, the family. They also visited an elementary school and exchanged cultural and linguistic experiences with children in Catalan and in English.

Students taking Spanish for Business and Tourism visited Bellver gothic castle and had to create a leaflet to promote the private use of the castle to make it more profitable economically.

2

Intermediate Spanish students went to the main market of Palma and learnt vocabulary of the different products sold there.

3

The class Advanced Spanish Writing and Stylistics participated in a Scavenger Hunt with the theme “Legends of the city of Palma”.

20

The best evaluated field visit was the last one. All language students went together to the winery and vineyards of Macià Batle, a local producer of a Mallorcan brand wine. Students had to formulate questions to the guide, take pictures, and listen to the presentation to write a report. They all said this was a wonderful exposure to this family owned company which has grown considerably in the last years becoming a well-known wine brand which has even started to win important wine competitions.

21

Business and Tourism students who are enrolled in the course International Meeting and Event Planning joined the nautical event named SuperYatch, and learnt first-hand from the organizers how they create and promote this event. Students commented hey were impressed by the complexity of the event. They all received free passes to visit the different events during the week.

5

As usual, CIEE organized different activities to participate in the life of Palma, such as joining the Official Presentation of Pla i Llevant wines. This year this event was even more interesting culturally speaking, as the different tables were set inside some of the old patios of Palma, from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century.

28

As far as excursions, the last month of the program CIEE Palma organized two different farewell excursions. The Business and Tourism program sailed from Palma bay to Cabo Blanco natural area on a sailboat. The Liberal Arts program took a boat in Soller to go to the impressive Torrent de Pareïs.

In the end, we met for a farewell party at the CIEE summer center. We were able to see a video performed, acted and edited by the students of the class Spanish Writing and Stylistics. We took many pictures and enjoyed spending time together, as we knew students would be very busy with exams and we staff would be busy with the summer programs.

Newsletter III, CIEE Palma de Mallorca Spring 2014: Academics

We are almost reaching the end of the semester.

Our Spring students have been busy with written projects, oral presentations and preparing for final exams.

CIEE classes ended by the last week of May, but most students were leaving by mid or end of June because they decided to take their final exam with the other Spanish students in their classes.

Out students spent Easter Break either travelling around Europe or exploring Mallorca with their friends. In both cases, they had a great time and when they came they filled Facebook with beautiful pictures. After the vacations, student restarted classes and internships.

Let me show you with images the last days of classes:

9

Lyna is doing her final presentation in front of the "Meetings and Events" class, about an interview to a DMC in Mallorca

 22

Anderson is doing his final presentation about his internship in TESL at an elementary school.

  33

  34

Christa and Michelle are doing their presentations on their internship experience, one at Hotel Purdo in the events department, and the other one at M3Forums.

35

And after all the presentations, we had some cookies brought by Christa!

  32

These wonderful women are presenting their "Revista Que Guay" for the class "Advanced Spanish Writing and Stylistics". And afterwards, they surprised us with a horror film they had made about a short story written by Olivia.
